The Thor's Hammer or "Mjollnir"
represents power, protection and strength used with honor. The name "Mjollnir"
actually means "miller". Though this aspect wasn't emphasised
in Viking times, the Norse god Thor (or Tor) was originally an agricultural god.
As the God of Thunder, Lightning and Storm, it is likely that he was called
upon to protect the crops from the wrath of nature. Ferocious as he appeared, with his wild red hair, this Viking warrior god was seen as a protector of people from the forces of evil. His greatest enemy is Jormungand, the Midgard Serpent, and many of the tales of Thor are of his thwarted attempts to slay that creature.
