Mercury or Hermes is the Roman/Greek god who rules trade, travel and communication. Like both the planet and the metal named after him, he is swift moving, and thus is often portrayed as a man in a cloak wearing winged sandals or "talaria" and a winged hat "petasus". This Messenger of the Gods is worshipped by merchants as well as thieves. Carrying the caduceus, a staff entwined by serpents, Mercury/Hermes is also seen as a god of healing, helping to bring swift recovery to those in need.
