Hotei Coming from a mix of Buddhist and Shinto religions, Hotei is known as "the Laughing Buddha." One of the Shichi Fukujin, the seven Japanese Shinto gods of luck, he appears as a man with a large, fat belly, symbolic of happiness, luck, and generosity. This merry, cheerful god goes around taking away people's woes and replacing them with joy. His name means "cloth bag" or "glutton," and usually carries a sack filled with precious items, such as candy for children, children themselves, food or the woes of the world. Legend says that if a person is to rub his belly, it brings forth wealth, good luck, and prosperity.
