Cranes are sacred to many cultures. They
symbolize wisdom and vigilance, and in many mythologies they are seen
as messengers of the gods. In Celtic lore, they are associated with shape-shifting
and the Otherworld. Mannanan Mac Lir, Wesh god of the Sea had a craneskin
bag which was said to contain treasures - some think this may refer to
the Ogham. As a totem cranes help bring light into the darkness, and are
thus helpful with divination and astral travel. In Greek myth they are
associated with the Sun God Apollo. The Japanese and the Chinese see them
as symbols of longevity, vitality and purity, as well as fidelity, since
cranes mate for life. It is said that folding a thousand origami cranes
will bring peace.
