The Athame, or witch's dagger is the tool of the element Air (or Fire in some traditions). The blade is double edged, and in many traditions, black hilted. Some traditions hold that one must never use it to cut mundane items (they use the white-hilted "boline" knife for this); I'm of the kitchen-witch school which says "since everything is sacred, why shouldn't I use it?" The athame represents utilization of the will force, and the double-edged power of freedom and responsibility. It is used in casting the circle and in drawing the pentacles of light at the four quarters.
