Jewelry With A Purpose

Beyond mere ornamentation, many maguses and witches use jewelry for specific magickal purposes.

Want to be a better student? Feel confident? Enhance your intuitive and psychic powers? All these and many more can be accomplished with the intentional wearing of empowered jewelry.

When choosing jewelry for a magickal purpose, it helps to make sure that the stones and magickal symbolism of the item is in line with your goal.

Then take time to energize your jewelry and empower it, and wear it to accomplish your goal.

A Blessing Ritual For Your Jewelry

A simple ritual to empower your magickal jewelry.

Make sacred space in whatever way is most comfortable to you. On your altar, place a candle, a nice incense - lavender and sage are lovely, as is franikincense - a bowl of water and some salt. Light the candle and incense, and taking 3 pinches of salt, drop it into the water and stir seven times clockwise.

Take up your jewelry and spend a moment meditating on its magickal purpose. Pull energy from the Earth and Sky and channel it into your item, filling it as full of energy as you can.

Pass the jewelry item throught the incense, saying, "May this object be blessed by the power of air, and aid me by ___." (say the magickal purpose for your item)

Pass it through the candle (quickly so as to not harm your fingers or the object), saying, "May this object be blessed by the power of fire, and aid me by ___"

Touch it to the water, saying, "May this object be blessed by the power of water, and aid me by ___"

Touch it to the salt, saying, "May this object be blessed by the power of water, and aid me by ___" (Be sure to dry it off soon after, so that the water and salt don't harm your item.)

Hold your item to the sky, saying "May this object be blessed by the power of All That Is (you can also add whatever deities you choose to invoke), and aid me in all the worlds, between the worlds, and beyond. By the power of moon and sun, by earth and sky, I bind this spell." (Visualized sealing the energy of your item, so that no outside energies can get in.) "May it be so."

Kiss the item, then hold it to your heart, saying, "May you serve me well."

Spend a little time enjoying your jewelry item, and when you are done, thank any powers you have invoked and dispell the sacred space in your usual way.

Empowering Jewelry By Moon, Sun and Storm

A lovely way to empower your jewelry is to expose it to the moon, the sun or the power of storm. Merely take it outside and place it where those elements will touch it. (Be certain to put it where others won't find it, think it's abandoned and make friends with it.)

Moon - For Lunar energies, take the jewelry outside and place it in the moonlight. Wake up while it's still dark and bring it back inside. Moonlight gives items a receptive, flowing ability, and is especially good for items designed to enhance the intuition and psychic power, and to balance the emotions.

Sun - For Solar energy, take your jewelry outside just before dawn, and leave it to gather sunshine all day, bringing it in just before dusk. (Do be aware that some stones, such as amethyst and kyanite will fade with too much sunlight, and don't expose them for too long (you may wish to empower those items for only a few hours near noon). Solar energy gives joy and vitality, and is good for workings dealing with health, confidence, courage and energy.

Storm - When the storm begins, place the item outside where it can be washed by the rain and catch the energy of the flashes of lightning. (You don't need to put it out on a lightning rod, just anywhere where the item can see the flashes.) Bring it in when the storm dies down. Storm energy is cleansing and full of vibrating energy. This is especially good for jewelry of a protective nature, for letting go of negative energies or to help you take action.

Bonding With Your Magickal Jewelry

When you have a new piece of magickal jewelry, take time to bond with it. Wear it every day for the space of a month, and at night, keep it under your pillow or on your altar. This helps your energies blend so that it becomes part of your aura, and creates a connection between you and your jewelry. That connection can allow you to call upon the powers of your jewelry even when you're not physically wearing it.

Jewelry Symbolism

Just as the stones or charms have symbolism, so to does the type of jewelry itself.

Necklaces are a circle, and thus represent the Circle of Life-Death-Rebirth as well as the circles of Earth, of the Universe, and the circle that we cast for sacred space. Women in the Craft also often wear a necklace as a connection to the beauty and power of the Goddess.

Chains are symbolic of bondage, however many of the Craft wear an unbroken chain (no clasp, but instead fused by soldering or jumprings, and large enough to slip over the head) to represent willing servitude to the Gods.

Rings are again an unbroken circle, symbolizing unity, eternity, the universe and the cycle of reincarnation. Rings are believed to bind power, keeping it within the body, and thus are often used in the taking of vows.

Bracelets, are a derivative of protective bracers, worn to ward off the blow of a sword or club. They are thus representative of strength and courage and make wonderful protective devices.

Earrings were originally worn to prevent disease or negativity from entering through the ears.

Magickal Jewelry Courtesy

Among most magickal people, it is considered rude to touch someone else's jewelry, or other magickal tools, without permission.

This is because when someone touches something, they leave an unseen thread of their energy attatched to it. The Polynesian word for this is "aka."

If you'd like to look closer at something, ask first if it's okay to touch, and don't be offended if the answer is a polite no.
